“Syria Day” Live Blog No. 12 (English)

The conflict in Syria has brought to the forefront the suffering of Christians in complex, explosive conflicts and, also, the reality of modern day Christian martyrs.  By any standard,” says John Allen Jr., “the scale of anti-Christian violence is stunningly vast. In fact, this may be one of the reasons it's difficult to raise an alarm: the numbers are so big it's hard to believe they're real.”  The Syrian conflict has also raised awareness of Christianity’s diversity in the region.  Fact: the persecution of Christian crosses denominational lines.  That is why, when Pope Francis met with Dr.Nikolaus Schneider, Präses (President) of the Evangelical Church (Lutheran) in Germany, the two spoke about “the ecumenism of the martyrs, to which the Pope gives particular weight, since the blood of the martyrs is something which profoundly unites the various Christian denominations in a common witness to Christ.”
The music in the CD “Martyrs’ Prayers” by The Project honors the “Ecumenism of the Martyrs,” and I highly recommend it.  On this Day of Fasting and Prayer for Peace in Syria, I wish to share with you, once again, The Project’s “Romero.”
